DESCRIPTION
Otterbein University is seeking a Lighting & Sound Supervisor who is a creative collaborator, skilled in theatrical sound and lighting technology as well as sound design to join our dedicated community of theatre teachers, learners, and practitioners. The Lighting & Sound Supervisor will train and mentor students in the areas of lighting and sound technology and sound design, to supervise the safe use and maintenance of the sound and lighting systems in our theatre facilities, and to manage the university and rental events held in the theatre spaces. The Lighting and Sound Supervisor is responsible for executing and/or supervising the execution of lighting, projection and sound requirements for all events in Theatre & Dance Department spaces. The Lighting and Sound Supervisor also designs sound for musicals during the academic year and plays and musicals during the professional summer theatre season. This is a full-time, exempt position working in close collaboration with the Faculty Lighting Designer, Production Manager, and Department Chair
SALARY RANGE: $43,000 - $45,000

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise all activities utilizing the lighting, projection and sound systems in the Fritsche Theatre and other Theatre and Dance Department spaces.
- Design and execute university events in the academic year and in the summer.
- Support rentals of the Fritsche Theatre and other Theatre and Dance Department spaces, including advancing, staffing, preparing, and supervising rental events. Run rental events as needed.
- Serve as Sound Designer for Otterbein Summer Theatre, which shall include reinforcement, recorded cues, and live mixing for straight plays and musicals.
- Serve as Sound Designer for musicals in the academic year. May be hired under separate contract to design sound for straight plays and the dance concert.
- Ensure safe work conditions.
- Actively supervise students in the safe and proper installation, operation, and strike of all lighting, projection, and sound equipment in all Theatre & Dance spaces in accordance with best professional and educational practices.
- Educate student Lead Electricians, Assistant Lead Electricians, and sound and light technicians in the proper, industry-standard execution of their responsibilities, including monitoring the practices of students in supervisory roles on department productions to ensure that they are handling their crews in accordance with department policies.
- Mentor student Sound Designers and Sound Mixers on musicals, and serve as the Designer and Mixer when there is no student with sufficient expertise to perform at or above departmental expectations.
- Supervise and mentor Lighting and Sound Assistant work-study students.
- Teach Sound Technology class. May be hired under separate contract to teach Sound Design class.
- Manage season and production-specific expenditures for light, sound and projection expenses within the constraints of established budgets.
- Maintain and repair all department lighting, projection and sound related equipment. Maintain lighting and sound inventories. Maintain repertory light plot.
- Occasional basic carpentry on departmental productions as needed. This is minimal and incidental in nature.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: BA or BFA in Theatre Technology or equivalent training plus professional theatre experience; MFA preferred. Professional experience including maintaining, repairing, installing, and striking lighting, projection, and sound equipment. Teaching experience required. Projections experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Exceptional ability to communicate with creative and technical staff, students and other constituencies.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: General math skills used in calculating safe electrical loads, basic carpentry and rigging, working with budgets, etc.
TECHNICAL SKILLS: Must take pride in and be thorough in the quality of work produced. Skilled in proper operation of lighting, sound, and counter-weight fly systems. Must be able to work with a minimum of direct supervision and cooperate fully with all members of a production team. Must have knowledge of safe electrical wiring, soldering, general lighting and sound repair techniques. General
shop skills should include carpentry and basic rigging techniques. Must have the ability to supervise and train student crews and the ability to support students in supervisory roles such as Lead Electrician and Sound Designer. Must understand and practice safe use of a personnel lift.
REASONING ABILITY: Must possess excellent attention to details; must be a team player and interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies. Must be able to solve routine and non-routine problems; must be able to creatively solve problems. Must exhibit a strong desire to mentor and work with students in a pre-professional BFA Design/Technology program.

Must be able to lift to 50 lbs. Must be able to ascend/descend ladders; must be able to occasionally crawl, stoop, and bend; must be able to communicate with co-workers and assigned students; must be able to hear and see to complete assigned work safely (including color vision).

Evening and weekend hours required as needed. Must be able to meet regular and predictable attendance standards.
Exposures to: sawdust as part of the set building process, paint fumes common when painting scenery, loud noises from the use of power tools. Masks and eye/ear protection are available as needed.
