Responsibilities
Performs routine building and grounds electrical work.
Electrical Maintenance and Repairs
- Installs and makes repairs and adjustments to such things as electrical controls, wiring, switches, simple appliances, and wall outlets.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to such things as electric motors, generators and similar equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks such as cleans, oils and maintains motors, brushes, bearings and switches.
- Installs and makes minor repairs to equipment such as air conditioners, motors, appliances, heating equipment and transformers.
Safety and Compliance
- Assumes responsibility for all secondary voltage on Zoo, Zoombezi Bay and Safari Golf Club grounds within and outside structures.
- Assures safety of self, staff, animals and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities; compliance with standard operating procedures; and proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Assures safety of visitors by blocking off hazardous areas.
- Interprets National Electric Code.
Operational Support
- Prepares job estimates for supervisor as requested.
- Provides support and assistance to any and all activities related to special events such as Wildlights and Zoofari.
- Assists other facilities staff when required.
- Participates in cross-training activities as directed.
Mission and Sustainability
- Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds.
- Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
- If applicable, monitors and distributes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Material Data Sheets to Facilities.
Qualifications
Education and Training
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical School (2-year degree) preferred.
- Completion of a 4-year training course as an apprentice electrician or Certificate of apprenticeship preferred.
Experience and Knowledge
- 5 years of electrical experience preferred.
- Minimum two years of journeyman experience as a building electrician preferred.
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials hazards, and safety precautions of the electrical trade, including knowledge of the National Electrical Codes preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Skills in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the electrical trade required.
- Skills in locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment required.
- Ability to make estimates of time and material.
- Ability to work from drawings and specification and to effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required, and being on-call on an emergency basis.
- Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
- Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the guest service standards.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
- Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
Additional Requirements
- Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
- Possession of a valid state issued motor vehicle operator's license and a good driving record required.
- Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and follow-up treatment required.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
